Higuys,
Footies were first designed to be very inexpensive & simple (it's been said your average Cub Scout could build one) and the size makes it convenient enough to take with you when you travel. You can easily fit one of the front seat of a car.
If you're interested in Footy sailboats, and Footy sailing/racing, there's a couple great websites I think you should visit and read thoroughly.
First,
The "Official" Footy class website: footy.rcsailing.net.
You can click the link, top left, to browse all the free plans or go to: footy.rcsailing.net/plans.php
Second,
This website was originally built for seniors by an older gengtleman, but it's just really good comprehensive information: www.footy-seniors.com/
Usually, you print the Footy plans on LEGAL- size paper (14 inches long) and cut out the plans, then trace onto thin balsa or plywood, glue together, seal and paint. Most boat hulls can be built in a day or a weekend. Then you just add the radio gear, rig and get a number for your sail.
Most plans give you some information about how to build the hull, or what kind of rig to use and where to locate it. The best thing is that you don't need to buy fancy bits of hardware or sails to build a Footy. Almost everything can be found in your average hardware stor or even your office desk drawer. I've made rigs with paper clips in stead of the usual fancy metal fittings.
You will want to become familliar with the Footy rules, especially the concept of the "box rule" footy.rcsailing.net/images/rules-summary.pdf
I think that if we get a few people with footies that sail well, we can then start to organize some kind of organized sailing or competition. Competition could be group sailing or we could sail against the clock using a 50-foot rope Footy course. footy.rcsailing.net/course-v2.php
